The Chinese American International school was founded in 1981 and is an English dual language school teaching kids from pre-kindergarten to the eighth grade. This 19,000 sq. ft. educational facility, creates playful outdoor spaces, while implementing sustainable design aspects.
It was essential that we create play spaces for the students, multi-purpose gathering areas and passive seating all within a tight urban setting. We carefully inserted new trees for shade and to break up the pavement and awareness of the buildings. Natural wooden logs and blocks were used to provide for informal and movable seats. Irregular concrete benches were also incorporated to define spaces in an unexpected way.
